YouTube Announces Face Blurring Option for Videos Requiring Anonymity

Today, YouTube announced a new feature that allows users to obscure faces within videos with the simple click of a button.

According to the international human rights organiztation WITNESS’ Cameras Everywhere report, “No video-sharing site or hardware manufacturer currently offers users” these options—making YouTube among the first.

To blur faces on YouTube, just follow these steps:

1.Click on Video Enhancement Tool
2. Go to Additional Features
3. Click the “Apply” button below Blur All Faces.
4. Approve the preview of the video
5. Save changes

Note: when you save the changes to your video, a new copy is created with the blurred faces. You are then given the option to delete the original video.

YouTube declares on its blog that it is “proud to be a destination where people worldwide come to share their stories, including activists. Along with efforts like the Human Rights Channel and Citizentube that curate these voices, we hope that the new technologies we’re rolling out will facilitate the sharing of even more stories on our platform.”

Just remember: posting videos—especially human rights footage—may present a variety of risks, so be sure to read YouTube’s suggestions for protecting yourself and the people in your videos.
