Think Twice Before Revealing Your Location

“I’m at the airport, on my way to visit Mom and Dad for a week.” You’ve probably read countless status updates on Twitter or Facebook that sound something like this.

Seems harmless enough, right? Not exactly. A new website, PleaseRobMe.com illustrates just how simple it is to stake out the perfect robbery online:

The danger is publicly telling people where you are. This is because it leaves one place you’re definitely not… home. So here we are; on one end we’re leaving lights on when we’re going on a holiday, and on the other we’re telling everybody on the internet we’re not home. … The goal of this website is to raise some awareness on this issue and have people think about how they use services like Foursquare, Brightkite, Google Buzz etc.

Be smart with the information you post online. Double check your privacy settings to make sure messages can only be viewed by “approved” friends, but even with privacy settings enabled,  remember you can never completely know who might see your message.
