iKeepSafe Receives $5,000 CVS Caremark Community Grant

Donation to iKeepSafe is part of CVS Caremark Community Grant’s Commitment to Helping All Children Reach their Full Potential

Salt Lake City, Utah – [July 16, 2012] – Internet Keep Safe Coalition (iKeepSafe) announced today that it has received a $5,000 CVS Caremark Community Grant.  iKeepSafe’s mission is closely aligned with CVS Caremark All Kids Can, the company’s signature philanthropic program committed to helping all children on their path to better health.  The grant from CVS Caremark will help iKeepSafe to develop and distribute an Internet Safety video for children with disabilities.  The video will serve as an effective medium to educate school personnel, parents and students about the unique risks that exist for children with disabilities.

iKeepSafe, established in 2005, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit international alliance of more than 100 policy leaders, educators, law enforcement members, technology experts, public health experts and advocates.Through this network of support, iKeepSafe tracks global trends and issues surrounding digitally connected products and their affect on children. This research drives the continuous creation of positive resources for parents, educators and policymakers who teach youth how to use media devices and platforms in safe, secure and healthy ways.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 1 in 20 school-age children in the United States have a disability. As part of the Generation Safe program, iKeepSafe will produce and distribute a new Internet Safety video covering children with disabilities and the risks they face online, including high functioning autistic children who are of high intelligence but lack the ability to read social cues. The coalition’s goal is to see generations of children with disabilities grow up safely using technology and the internet.

The video will serve as a successful vehicle to deliver information in a quick and informative manner. It will provide quick and easy tips on how to identify and respond to the unique online risks that exist for children with disabilities. It will also explore best practices for prevention, detection, intervention and post incident response.

The video will be distributed to district administrators, school resource officers, media literacy specialists, network administrators, school administrators, educators, and school counselors through iKeepSafe’s Generation Safe program.

“As a CVS Caremark Community Grantee, iKeepSafe will have the opportunity to further its goal and ensure that all youth are safe and secure online, addressing the need to include all children with disabilities in online safety education,” said Ilene Atiyah, iKeepSafe Senior Advisor. “The video will serve as a unique education and awareness tool; it will increase parents and educators’ competence and confidence while guiding and protecting children with disabilities online.”

“We are committed to making a positive impact in the communities where we live and work and the CVS Caremark Community grants program does just that by supporting organizations that truly make a difference in the lives of children and families,” said Dennis Palmer, SVP CVS/pharmacy West Division Operations.  “We are proud to support the work that iKeepSafe does in the community and we look forward to working with them in the year ahead.”

iKeepSafe was selected to receive a grant through the CVS Caremark Community Grants 2011 grant application process.  Grants were awarded to organizations that share a common vision with CVS Caremark’s All Kids Can program, which strives to empower children with and without disabilities to reach their full potential.  The goals of the All Kids Can program are to increase access to early-intervention programs that help children develop strong foundations early in life, reduce barriers to medical rehabilitation and health care services, and create greater opportunities for physical activity and creativity.
