It’s important to visit with your children about these and other topics prior to the “drama” starting.

Managing Digital Drama

I will never forget the day when Doug, one of the teens in my household, smashed his cell phone against the wall, breaking it into pieces. Doug was being harassed by another student, was tired of the relentless attacks, and took his anger out on the phone. Two important things he learned that day were: walk away from technology when angry, and reach out for help. It was a learning moment for both of us and we had a good talk after he calmed down. It turned out that some mean girls were sending text messages saying how fat he was.

Doug and I talked about walking away from technology when your upset prior to this incident, but it’s important to have talks with kids about technology more than once.

Does your kid have a 24/7 smartphone? Doug only had a basic cell phone – not a smartphone with 24/7 internet access. Since 78% of teens today already have cell phones, it’s important to have a talk with your kids, whether it’s for the first time or as a reminder. Here are five important cell phone tips for every teen:

1. Use a password or passcode to lock your cell phone,
2. Turn off geotagging and location tracking,
3. Walk away from technology when you are angry,
4. Don’t use technology as a weapon, and
5. Protect your cell in public places.

Take advantage of the free download, read it, and give it to your teens. Digital Drama is a great tool to use to help you discuss technology with your kids. There is something in this book for everyone.
