Make the Dinner Table a Media-Free Zone

Don’t allow media at the dinner table, no exceptions.

This sounds extreme, but Columbia University’s CASA has identified the single greatest predictor that a child will grow up drug free is five nights a week sitting down for family dinner.(click to tweet)

In the study, three-quarters of teens (75 percent) say they talk to their parents about what’s going on in their lives at dinner. Nearly eight in 10 parents (79 percent) agree that by having dinner together they learn more about what’s going on in their teens’ lives. Texting, surfing, and watching television can seriously disrupt this important bonding time.
